Depending on the perspective reading can be defined in different manners. With the bottom-up approach, reading is viewed as a process of decoding written symbols from small units (individual letter) to larger ones (words, phrases, sentences). While top-down strategy draws our own intelligence and experience to understand a text.
Recent research indicates that both strategies may be used in learning to read, and that efficient reading might require the integration of both, been the reader's purpose the main factor to be considered when reading and comprehending a text.

Reflection
Before I worked on this research task I just thought of reading as the mechanic process of interpreting and decoding letters into a larger sentence. I did not take into account any other factor that might influence my readings or even use strategies that could help my comprehension.
In other words, I just read. Now I can approach reading with a whole new perspective. I realize the benefits of integrating methodologies such as scanning, skimming and guessing meaning of words by analyzing them or putting them into context. Another useful method are the pre-readings activities which help to set the purpose and context of the reading itself. Reading it is not an invariant skill, depending on our objective there are many other abilities we can develop.
